Back Injuries

Back Pain? You are not alone.

Most people will have a back problem at one point or another in their lifetime. Below are some of the most common back injuries that we treat,

The disc between the vertebrae may become damaged and bulge slightly, causing pressure on the nerves. This can cause back pain, leg pain, pins and needles and possible numbness. Physiotherapy is very effective in the treatment and pain management of prolapsed disc.

The term is used to refer to pain originating from pressure or irritation to the sciatic nerve. This nerve exits the spine in the lower back and travels down the leg. Causes of sciatica may include a disc bulge or poor posture. Only the most severe cases require management other than physiotherapy and exercise.

A sprain is a stretching or tearing of ligaments — the tough bands of fibrous tissue that connect two bones together in your joints. The most common location for a sprain is in your ankle.

Your spine is strong and stable when you practice healthy posture. But when you slouch or stoop, your muscles and ligaments strain to keep you balanced — which can lead to back pain, headaches and other problems.

Degenerative changes in the spine are those that cause the loss of normal structure and/or function. They are not typically due to a specific injury but rather to age. Repeated strains, sprains, and overuse of the back cause a gradual degeneration of the disks of the spine. Nearly everyone experiences some disk degeneration after age 40.

Workers’ Compensation Board Coverage

We are authorized providers

Riverside Physiotherapy Clinic is an Authorized Provider of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation services for Alberta’s Workers’ Compensation Board aka ‘WCB’. This gives us direct billing privileges with the WCB; therefore, injured workers do not have to pay out of pocket for our services. Our main goal for all WCB cases is to facilitate the injured worker to achieve full recovery as soon as possible. The goal of rehabilitation is to maintain the injured worker in or return them to suitable employment. On your first visit for a WCB approved claim, expect a full assessment of your injury, a treatment plan including an actual treatment on the day, and a personal exercise program for you to do at home. In cases of work place injuries, we advise that you report your injury to your employer or manager within three days, or present yourself at our clinic within three days of your injury, and we will help you to fill out the necessary forms to make the report and commence treatment immediately. As your healthcare providers, we are required by law to make this report of your injury within 48 hours.
